Before it was a club, it was a hole in the ground. For more than half a century the county mined sand and gravel here, a working pit known as Keller. William Morrow and Henry Burdick, two golfers tired of overcrowded tee sheets, bought 105 acres at auction, added about 255 more, and recruited thirteen founding associates. They hired Tom Fazio to turn a quarry into a cove. The championship course opened on schedule on January 1, 1994. The Quarry at La Quinta still behaves like that origin story: invitation only, no tee times, houses kept off the shot, and a Fazio routing that uses the pit's elevation instead of pretending the desert was always this pretty.
Fazio's blueprint stacked the golf. Seven holes and a driving range sit on the quarry floor. Seven more occupy an alluvial fan about 80 feet above. Four holes play on a plateau at the top of the mountain cove, with the Santa Rosa and Coral Mountains as the back wall. A 10-hole short course sits with the championship eighteen, along with an 18-hole putting course in club materials. Club histories describe more than 1.2 million cubic yards of dirt moved, more than 4,000 trees, and some 80,000 shrubs and cacti installed before opening day. Waterfalls and streams were part of finishing the mined land, not decoration dropped onto a flat floor. Conditioning has been a founding boast since 1994. The championship course appeared on Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest lists in the years after it opened. Treat any current ranking as something to verify, not a permanent plaque.
The early plan put residences around the perimeter so streets and rooftops would be partly concealed from a golfer's view. That instinct still governs how the place feels. You are not buying a fairway corridor lined with repeating elevations. Residential product is custom and tightly held. The club does not publish a public floor-plan library or an official homes count. Membership is by invitation and is not created by buying a nearby house.
