Tamarisk Country Club opened in February 1952 as the Coachella Valley's second 18-hole course, a year after Thunderbird, and for a reason the current general manager still states in print. Thunderbird's early membership was restricted. Entertainers and Jewish golfers who were not invited, many of them already members at Hillcrest in Los Angeles, founded their own club. FORE Magazine quotes Chris Bonvie on the missing invitations. The "Golden 65" founding roster included George Burns, Danny Kaye, Jack Benny, and four of the five Marx Brothers. Ben Hogan, then reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion, became head professional. The course is in Rancho Mirage. The origin story is not a plaque you skip on a tour. It is why Tamarisk exists.
From the start the tee sheet read like a marquee: Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Danny Thomas, Red Skelton, Walter Annenberg, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr., Dinah Shore, Milton Berle, Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Kirk Douglas, Eddie Fisher, Jerry Lewis. In the mid-1950s Frank Sinatra bought a small one-story William F. Cody house on the 17th fairway and grew it into the Wonder Palms compound: about 2.5 acres, cottages, guest rooms, a helipad, a tennis court, and two pools. That house is Tamarisk, not Movie Colony's Twin Palms, and not Thunderbird Heights. Keep the Sinatra geography straight. Tamarisk later hosted LPGA golf in 1963 and took a rotation in the desert's PGA Tour event, the Palm Springs Golf Classic. Residential product associated with Tamarisk is custom and historic rather than a named condominium collection. There is no public floor-plan PDF library. Fairway lots, later rebuilds, and off-fairway Rancho Mirage houses all borrow the club's gravity. Membership is a separate process from title. A listing that says "Tamarisk" may mean a house inside the club's residential pattern or a nearby address using the name for search. Ask which association, if any, governs the property, and ask Membership whether a category is available or transferable. Thunderbird remains the 1951 restricted original that became the presidents' club. Tamarisk remains the 1952 answer. They are a mile of Rancho Mirage history apart and should be shown as a pair only if the buyer understands they are not substitutes. Highway 111, Sunnylands, and Mission Hills complete the immediate map. Palm Springs International Airport is a short drive north.
Hogan as opening head pro is not trivia. It tells you the founders intended a serious golf club, not a social compromise. The inclusion origin and the championship staff were the same project. That is still the right way to explain Tamarisk to a buyer who only knows Thunderbird's celebrity list.
