Ernie Vossler and Joe Walser Jr. bought the La Quinta Hotel in 1977 and spent the next two decades turning the east valley into a golf city. Landmark Land put Pete Dye to work beside the resort first. Mountain and Dunes opened in 1980. The Stadium Course followed in 1986, mean enough that Jim Murray wrote you needed a camel, a canoe, a priest, and a tourniquet to get through it. The Bob Hope Desert Classic arrived in January 1987. PGA WEST still calls itself the Western Home of Golf in America, and the name is not a slogan so much as a count: nine championship courses under Coral Mountain, five of them open to resort play, four of them private.
Pete Dye designed Stadium, Mountain, Dunes, and the private Citrus Course (1987). Jack Nicklaus added Tournament and Private in 1989. Arnold Palmer's private course opened with the Stadium era. The Stadium 17th, an island green nicknamed Alcatraz, is the public face of the property. Lee Trevino aced it during the 1988 Skins Game. On the 18th hole of Palmer Private, David Duval's eagle closed a 59 and won the 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, still one of the Tour's cleanest recorded rounds. Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament continue to host The American Express each January. Tim Liddy, who spent decades with Dye, completed a Stadium restoration in 2024. Century Golf Partners and Hankuk Industry acquired the portfolio in 2020: two private clubs, five clubhouses, nine courses.
Housing at PGA WEST is not one product. Gated enclaves hold condos, townhomes, patio homes, golf-front houses, and custom estates, each with its own association, reserve practice, and rental rules. Entry pricing and estate pricing can sit in the same master plan. The right first question is which course, which product type, and which HOA packet, not a single community average. Homeownership does not include private-club membership. Buyers who want member golf join separately through The Club at PGA WEST or The Citrus Club. That split is useful for second-home owners who want a lock-and-leave house without carrying a full golf membership. The Club at PGA WEST describes member access that can include private and resort courses depending on category, plus dining, a Sports Club, social programming, and a dog park. The Citrus Club sits among citrus groves with mountain and fairway views and keeps historic ties to the La Quinta Resort experience.
