Monterey Country Club is Sunrise Company's 1978-to-1982 Palm Desert condominium club: 1,206 homes on 375 acres, 27 holes by Ted Robinson, a 27,000-square-foot clubhouse, and a spelling that listings still get wrong. It is Monterey, one r, the California peninsula, not Monterrey. Bill Bone built it after Sunrise Country Club and Rancho Las Palmas, before Palm Valley, The Lakes, Indian Ridge, and Toscana. The official geography is between Monterey Avenue and Portola Avenue, north of Magnesia Falls Drive, north of College of the Desert. The published club address is 41-500 Monterey Avenue, Palm Desert, CA 92260.
Robinson designed three nines that pair as East/South, South/West, and East/West. Club copy describes narrow, palm-lined fairways, well-bunkered greens, and water on several holes, with Santa Rosa views from the rolling site. Practice is a driving range, short-game area, and putting green. Men's, ladies', and niners associations keep the calendar full. Sunrise-era materials also listed 19 tennis courts. Current club membership pages emphasize tennis, a large pickleball inventory, and bocce; live counts move when courts are resurfaced. Confirm the racquet board with the pro shop. A junior Olympic pool, fitness room, and Spanish Colonial clubhouse handle the non-golf day. Full Golf and other published categories mix rounds and sports-center access. Fees update. Ask Membership.
Floor plans in market copy run about 1,300 to 2,200 square feet. Many units have been opened up since 1982. Plan names appear in agent marketing. The club does not publish an official public drawing library. Use MLS and the HOA packet for unit size, which building type you are in, and remodel rules. Golf is not usefully described as "included" until you read the current category. Some market pages advertise no golf initiation and monthly golf dues on top of HOA and social; reprinting those dollars would be a gift to next year's wrong spreadsheet. The culture the club still prints is "Have Fun Stay Young," which is a real sentence on the website and a fair warning that Monterey sells activity more than quiet custom lots.
Palm Valley (36 holes, 1,274 units) and The Lakes (27 holes, 902 condos, homeowner-owned) sit in the same Palm Desert band. Indian Ridge is the later every-house-on-a-fairway version. Monterey is the early, large, 27-hole condominium club next to the college. El Paseo and Highway 111 are close. That convenience is the amenity people actually use in July.
College of the Desert next door is not a footnote. It is traffic, parking, and a calendar of events you will feel on Monterey Avenue. It is also why the club stays useful for full-time owners who want services close. Compare a 1,400-square-foot un-updated fourplex interior with a fully opened 2,000-square-foot unit on a water hole before you decide Monterey has a single price. It does not.
