Indian Canyons is South Palm Springs as a golf neighborhood, not as a private equity club. The courses opened as Canyon Country Club. Developers had wanted a 550-acre tract owned by members of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, first proposing the name Wyndfree until other desert clubs objected to the implication that they played in wind. First National Realty, headed by Bob Grundt, settled on Canyon Country Club. William F. Bell designed the golf. Donald Wexler and Ric Harrison designed a $1.5 million midcentury clubhouse. Russian-born builder Boris Gertzen finished the clubhouse in 73 days. New Year's Eve 1961 is the party date in some accounts; Palm Springs Mayor Frank Bogert cut a ribbon in October 1962. The North Course was the first 18-hole golf course in the city of Palm Springs. O'Donnell, older, is nine holes. The Agua Caliente Band later assumed the remaining master lease and renamed the operation Indian Canyons Golf Resort. Play is public.
The North Course, Bell's, sits at 1100 East Murray Canyon Drive. The South Course followed on the other side of Murray Canyon Drive; current public operations run both. Jack Koennecker, recruited from Chicago after a Clark Gable recommendation, was the teaching pro to a list that included Frank Sinatra, Jack Benny, and Robert Wagner. Irene Koennecker built the Shop de Golf. Walt Disney gifted a copper lily-pad fountain with 100-foot jets between holes 9 and 18, still visible from the clubhouse's double-height glass. Sidney Williams has described the porte cochere and bow-shaped plan as signature Wexler-Harrison moves. The clubhouse remains one of the city's important midcentury golf buildings, which is why Modernism Week has used it. Residential living around the courses is separate from resort operations. Confirm HOA and rental rules by address. There is no equity membership bundled with a nearby house.
The Indian Canyons Neighborhood Organization dates neighborhood development to the early 1960s, with the Canyon Hotel Racquet and Golf Resort as a second anchor. Orange County developer Harry Kelso built high-end houses and condominiums primarily from 1963 to 1970. Arizona builder Paul Butler and Roy Fey of Fey's Canyon Estates also built here. Architects associated with the wider area include Stan Sackley and William Krisel. Housing today runs from midcentury tract and custom to later desert contemporary. No centralized public floor-plan PDF pack defines the district. Andreas Hills, Parc Andreas, The Mesa, and Cahuilla Hills are neighboring South Palm Springs products with their own pages. Do not file them as one canyon.
The district sits about two miles south of downtown along the Palm Canyon corridor, with trail access toward Andreas, Murray, and Palm Canyons. Wind-free play was the original sales pitch, and the canyon walls still do that work. Downtown dining is a short drive. The airport is closer than most south-valley clubs. You are buying a house in a historic golf neighborhood next to tribal public courses, not a member roster.
