Milton "Farmer" Page was a Las Vegas gambler, not a rancher. He walked with a shuffle, dressed badly on purpose, and won a 792-acre fruit ranch in a sheltered Indian Wells cove in a poker game. That orchard became Eldorado Country Club, spelled as one word, a member-owned private club that finished its William F. Cody clubhouse just in time to host the 1959 Ryder Cup. Sam Snead captained the American side. The United States won 8.5 to 3.5. The ninth and eighteenth holes were switched for the matches. Indian Wells barely had a civic skyline, and the desert already had a Ryder Cup.
William F. Cody, the Palm Springs modernist who had already shown Thunderbird how to put lots on a golf course, designed a light clubhouse on slim posts with long reflecting pools on the approach. Period advertising quoted Gene Sarazen likening it to Versailles. Dwight D. Eisenhower first visited the year of the Ryder Cup. After the White House he accepted honorary membership, asked to be called General rather than Mr. President, and kept a winter house on the eleventh fairway with Mamie. Ronald Reagan later became an honorary member. Club history counts five United States Presidents among the membership over time. The culture still sells that continuity: families returning, guests arriving only with members, a cove that feels older than the city around it.
The original golf course is credited to Lawrence Hughes. In 2003 Tom Fazio rebuilt it, changing hole configurations, widening tees, reshaping greens and bunkers, and adding water and landscape features. Treat current scorecards and ratings as living documents and confirm them with the Golf Shop. Tennis and fitness facilities were added in the late 1990s. Ike's, a casual dining room named for the General, opened around the club's 60th anniversary and was funded by member donations. The dramatic setting remains the same cove at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains that Page's deed described as sheltered.
Membership at Eldorado is by invitation only and, per the club's history page, is not tied to real estate ownership. That is the single most important diligence fact for anyone shopping streets around the course. Residential product includes classic and updated desert homes oriented to fairways and the mountain cove. The club does not publish a public floor-plan library or a single official residence count. Guests typically arrive through member invitation, then may be considered after repeated visits. Initiation and dues schedules are not posted for the public web.
